WHY MANAGERS WON’T MANAGE — AND WHAT HR CAN DO ABOUT IT
WASHINGTON DC, May 4, 2009 — On May 12 from 2–3:30pm Dr. Alice Waagen, president of the leadership training company Workforce Learning, will lead an important webinar: “Why Managers Won’t Manage—and What HR Can Do About It.”
The event is being hosted by BNA, the largest independent publisher of information and analysis products for professionals in business and government, (sign up here).
“Image a restaurant where chefs can choose whether or not they will cook, or an airline where pilots can decide that they do not want to fly planes,” Dr. Waagen says. “In almost any job, if a person doesn’t want to perform basic job functions, they are fired. And yet, in the world of business, managers can elect not to manage their direct reports, sometimes with few to no consequences.”
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN OTHERS ARE NOT MANAGING?
HR professionals can easily spot weak management: it is embodied in that line of employees at the HR office door, complaining that their performance review is weeks late, that they are not treated fairly or equitably when given projects and assignments, that they are being micromanaged, that their boss does not return phone calls or emails…. The issues seem endless. As Dr. Waagen recounts, “One HR colleague said to me, ‘If my managers actually managed their staff, my workload would be cut in half.’”
Skills training alone will not produce high-performing managers, emphasizes Dr. Waagen, who has been delivering management development programs for more than 20 years. “Creating a strong management team requires three components: training, time and accountability.” In the webinar she will discuss each of these components and how they can be handled more effectively to improve any company’s management strength.
IN THIS 90-MINUTE WEBINAR YOU WILL LEARN:
- The key knowledge and skill areas needed in management development programs
- How managers should allocate their time to most effectively manage staff
- How to create a system of management accountability that recognizes and promotes leadership excellence
- How to create a business case for building management strength in your organization
